Artist Statement of Pam outdusis Cunningham, Penobscot

I love every aspect of my basket making. I love the fact that, in some ways, I am following the footsteps of my ancestors. Many of the oldest and simplest traditions remain. I spend my time making baskets in view of the Penobscot River throughout the winter, and travel to the coast of Maine to sell those baskets in the summer.

In addition to the time that I spend working with the ash and sweetgrass, I also keep involved in other activities that help promote not only the economic aspect of basket making but increase awareness of the history of the art. These activities include membership on the Maine Indian Basketmakers Board of Directors 1998-2002 and as a Master Weaver through the Maine Arts Commission apprenticeship program 2000 and 2003 plus the frequent workshops and demonstrations.

I am Penobscot and of the turtle clan. I was raised on Oak Hill, Indian Island, Maine. It was then that I was given my Penobscot name outdusis (little pathway). Looking for a short cut to my friend’s home, I spent all morning walking back and forth from my house to my friend’s making a little pathway.
