Blue Rain Print by Jerry Jacob Laktonen, Alutiiq

Artist Statement:

"This design is based on a mask from Kodiak Island collected by Alphonse Pinart around 1870, which is in his collection in France. The lines of "rain" on the face lend themselves to interpretations of a rain mask, symbolizing the incredible stamina and willpower it took to withstand the long, cold, rainy and snowy winters in Kodiak. It made sense to me, as I've experienced this in the same way the ancestors did. It became, to me, an endurance mask symbolizing the inner strength it took (or developed) to live in such a harsh environment.

"As far as the ancient interpretation, this was all lost, as there was a gap in the understanding of our traditions; the physical artifacts are all we have to help us explain our interpretation of existence."

Jerry Laktonen
