North by Northeast by Kathleen Mundell, not native
This new title by Kathleen Mundell is a wonderful overview of contemporary Native American arts as practiced in the Northeast. It covers basket making, bead work, canoes, root clubs, and other art forms created by Wabanaki, Akwesasne Mohawk, and Tuscarora artists primarily in Maine, New York, and southern Canada.
The book briefly covers the history of each art form, then goes into detail regarding how the art is created. There are essays by several of the artists, and biographies/life stories of both living and deceased artists.
This is a must-read for anyone interested in art by Native Americans in the Northeastern part of the United states and southeastern Canada.
